![]() ![]() Kubrick had wanted the aliens to appear at the end, but according to Douglas Trumbull, "we never got to it." The hotel suite in which Bowman spends the last minutes of the film is an illusion created by the aliens as he's going through this metamorphosis. These will have been sent by advanced alien life-forms who wish to help mankind evolve and so, once mankind has the means to reach outer space and, ultimately, Jupiter, he is granted the capacity to evolve beyond man. The intermediate Monoliths - the ones found on the Moon and near Jupiter - function more like beacons that lead towards the final Monolith. I guess part of the confusion is that the Monolith returns several times in the movie as an icon, but it doesn't always fulfill the same purpose: in the beginning and end of the film, they serve as "learning machines" that bestow upon mankind knowledge and push them up the evolutionary tract: from ape-man to man and then from man to starchild. Clarke's novel but also from a rare phone interview that Kubrick gave and so behind-the-scenes tidbits. Nevertheless, there is a bigger story (of sorts) to the film, which can be illucidated not just from Sir Arthur C. Its relationship to the story and themes of the film as a whole is a very fuzzy one, and it mostly exists as an obstacle that the main character must overcome along the way to his destination, and a proof of worthiness. The AI is the one bit of character-driven storytelling in there, so its no wonder that's what you remember. This is just something I was nit able to get behind. I'd also like to mention that I do enjoy a lot of Kubrick's works. ![]() I like open ended movies to an extent but this movie felt more like a bad modern art piece like the banana taped to the wall rather than an intricate puzzle with many different conclusions. Some might say it's supposed to be slow but it feels like someone hit the brakes hard after the intro.Īnother criticism I have is how open ended the movie is. The movie loses it's speed once the main plot begins. This is the only movie from my recent history that I remember pausing, doing some chores and then continuing. Usually, I'll keep watching movies no matter how mind boggling they are with my complete interest. I would like to know.Įdit: I've now gotten a better understanding of the movie but I still think there's a lot of criticise here. If any of you think there's more to it, please tell me. One guy becomes a fetus in space or something. The AI decides that people are only holding it back from successfully accomplishing. I think the rest of the movie is very boring and meaningless.Īll I remember is, there's a ship of people and a very smart AI who pretty much has access to everything in the ship. It's extremely well shot and well produced but I don't see any apeal to it. ![]() But after that when the real movie begins is when I dislike the movie. I very much enjoyed the beginning with the evolution of mankind and the creepy monolith. I am someone who enjoys movies you'll need to ponder to understand but one such movie I don't get is 2001.
